Position Description:

Manager, Championship Operations – Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA)

OVERVIEW:

The Manager, Championship Operations, works closely with and reports directly to the MGA Director of Championships, and is primarily responsible for supervision and oversite of all operations at events conducted by the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA). Reporting to the Manager, Championship Operations will be 1) the current Championship Administration role, who will handle all administration efforts associated with the Championship Department, 2) Championship Fellow, who provides general support for Championship Operations and Client Services and 3) Seasonal support staff including USGA P.J. Boatwright Jr. Intern(s) and other Independent Contractors.

Duties and responsibilities of the Manager include but are not limited to:

Tournament Administration for MGA, USGA and Client Associations (e.g. Westchester Golf Association):

  • Pre-tournament meetings with club representatives
    • Work with club staff to coordinate use of club facilities and equipment (golf carts, food and beverage, on-course water coolers, locker rooms, and driving range)
  • Creation of Championship collateral, including but not limited to; Memo to Players, Pace of Play Sheets, Hole Location Sheets and Notice to Players
  • Prepare championship and qualifier pairings
  • Golf course set-up
  • Select hole locations, develop yardage plans and establish pace of play policy
  • Identify and mark Hazards, Out of Bounds, and Ground Under Repair
  • On site application of the Rules of Golf to develop a “Notice to Players” for each specific Championship and Course
  • Oversee event infrastructure (tents, signs, tee markers, flags, etc.)
  • Work closely with the Rules Committee leadership to administer the Rules of Golf
  • Organize staff and volunteers for on-course officiating
  • Equipment organization, upkeep and ordering

Communication and Website

  • Communicate pertinent event information via email to players, MGA volunteers and host clubs
  • Assist in the maintenance of Championship content on mgagolf.org

Rules of Golf

  • Heavy involvement in the various MGA Rules initiatives (Rules & Procedures Exam, MGA Rules Quiz, Rules Simplified program management) and ability to answer Rules of Golf inquiries
  • Assist in the execution and presentation of the MGA Rules education seminars

General Administration

  • Provide support and expertise via email, phone, and in-person on all aspects of the MGA Championship department and the Rules of golf to players, members, and member clubs
  • Manage the MGA Tournament Registration site and oversee player registration
  • Use overall expertise to support all appropriate MGA departments and services

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and passion for the game of golf
    • Tournament administration and Rules of Golf knowledge
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S.) preferably in sports management or related field
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, telephone), public relations and organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Advanced computer skills (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database programs) and should be proficient with internet operations
    • Proficiency with tournament administration software (GGS, USGA TM)
    • Willingness to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented structure with emphasis on customer service ideals
    • Ability to travel in the Tri-State area and perform set-up duties related to events
    • Access to an automobile
