"I had a wonderful round today and played better than I've played in quite some time," the former Long Island Senior Amateur champion claimed. "This is a real shot making golf course, and the greens are as severe as any green that I've played."

Winkelman, who had not played Apawamis until his practice round last week, also said that he was able to hit good drives off the tee that got him where he needed to be in the fairway, and set him up for precise short play around the greens.

Winkelman first played in an MGA championship at the age of 19, and doesn't have too much time to rest as he is headed back to Long Island Tuesday where he will play in the LIGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Coming in just one shot behind Winkelman at 2-over 74 was Ron Vannelli of Forsgate, the 2012 and '08 MGA Senior Amateur champion. Vannelli, the 2005 MGA Player of the Year, is set to play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur beginning October 5.

Finishing in third place today was Robert Miller of Spook Rock, who shot a 3-over 75. After two players finished with a net score of even par 72, it was determined through a match of cards that Rob Nagy of The Connecticut Golf Club was the First Low Net and Robert Housen of Manasquan River was Second Low Net.

This championship marked the 19th MGA event that Apwamis has hosted, more than any other club. Known for its tight layout and tough greens, the course proved to be a true test for the group of Super Seniors today at 6,217 yards.
