Kevin and Conor Casey Win MGA Father and Son

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.  (August 12, 2014)Kevin and Conor Casey of Galloping Hill and Somerset Hills won the 64th MGA Father & Son Championship at Brooklake Country in Florham Park, N.J., through rainy conditions today. The Caseys had the best score of the day with a 3-under 69 and led the rest of the field by one stroke. Kevin, the director of the Hoffman Cup Matches, said he “just wanted to keep the  ball in play for Conor,” which he did throughout the day. Playing in Pinehurst format, the team only had four birdies and only one bogey. Conor, a frequent MGA competitor, was happy to share a win with his dad. “We’re thrilled,” he said, “we  had a blast out there.”

Lou and James Buttermark of Richmond County placed in  second after firing a 2-under par 70. They held the clubhouse lead until the Casey’s  finished in the last group. Coming in 3rd were Morten and Christopher Gotterup of Rumson. Chris, runner-up in last week’s Met Junior, and his father Morten were the first group to finish and held the lead for the majority of the day.

Two time winners Ken and William Bakst of Friar’s Head finished in 4th place after carding an even par 72. Tying for 5th place were Eric and James Corrigan of Ardsley and Gary and Erik Stauderman of Dutchess after both shot 1-over par 73s.

Finishing in first in the professional division were Kyle and Matt Hardy of West Hills and Mendham, firing a 2-under par 70 and winning the professional division for the second straight year.

The first low net prize was awarded to Ed and Ryan Coughlin of Ramsey who came in at net 5-under par 67.

Brooklake Country Club played to a par 36-36-72 at 6,594 yards.

The MGA Father and Son Championship is 18 holes of stroke play in the Pinehurst format: both partners drive from the tee and then each plays a second shot with the other's ball.  After the second shot, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed - alternate shots being continued into the hole.
