Met Area Locals at U.S. Senior Am

UPDATED 4:03 p.m. (September 16, 2014) - Al Small led his Round of 32 match for 15 holes, even by as many as 4 up through nine holes. His opponent Chris Hall finally squared the match on the 16th and then proceeded to win in stunning fashion by claiming the final two holes for a 2 up victory. It was a good run for Small and he nearly advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in his U.S. Senior Amateur career, but came up just short.

UPDATED 8:00 a.m. (September 16, 2014) - Al Small advanced through to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Senior Amateur, defeating Tim Sorrows of Ohio in yesterday's Round of 64. He will take on Chris Hall of Mableton, Georgia in the Round of 32 on Tuesday morning.

Ken Bakst, Adam Kugler and Peter Herzog fell in their matches and failed to advance to the next round.

UPDATED 9:49 a.m. (September 15, 2014) - After two rounds of stroke play qualifying at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship this weekend some of the locals advanced to the match play portion of the tournament. The 2009 MGA Senior Amateur Champion Al Small of Florham Park, N.J. carded rounds of 72 and 75 for a 36-hole total of 3-over 147. That earned him a spot in the Round of 64 as the 35th overall seed. Small will face off with the 30th overall seeded Tim Sorrows today at 10:35 a.m. pacific time.

Also through to the Round of 64 is the reigning MGA Senior Open Champion Adam Kugler of Closter, N.J. Kugler fired rounds of 74 and 72 for a 2-over total of 146, slotting him at the 25th overall seed. He will take on the 40th overall seed Frank Dial today at 8:45 a.m. Matching Kugler 2-over total was Peter Herzog of Norwalk, Conn. He also carded rounds of 72 and 74 and will be the 24th overall seed. He will play the 41st seed Stewart Alexander today at 8:55 a.m. 

1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur Champion Ken Bakst of Riverhead, N.Y. isn't into the Round of 64 yet, but could make it when a 15 player for 13 spots playoff begins at 7:15 a.m. pacific time on the 10th tee. Bakst is part of the hoard of players that carded 5-over 36-hole totals and will be in the playoff. He had rounds of 78 and 71.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 10, 2014) - The 2014 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship will be held in Newport Beach, California, and five of the Met Area's top players age 55 and older will take on Big Canyon Country Club. 

Al Small of Florham Park, N.J., will look to secure the title after falling in the Round of 32 in 2013. Small, 63, has captured many of the Area's Senior titles, including the 2013, '12 and '11 New Jersey Senior Amateurs, the 2009 MGA Senior Amateur, and a low-amateur finish at the 2012 MGA Senior Open.

Other Met Area players competing are:

Ken Bakst, Riverhead, N.Y., the 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur winner

Peter Herzog, Norwalk, Conn.

Tom Hyland, Marlton, N.J.

Adam Kugler, Closter, N.J., the reigning MGA Senior Open champion

Tom Yellin, New York, N.Y.
