The MGA Mourns the Passing Joseph C. Cantwell

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 28, 2015) The Metropolitan Golf Association is deeply saddened to report the passing of its 53rd President, Joseph C. Cantwell.  Joe passed away on Sunday, July 26th, at age 85, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Cantwell served amateur golf at virtually every level for nearly 30 years.  He began his service as a volunteer in 1988 as a member of the MGA’s Rules and Competition Committee, a committee he went on to chair for many years.  He was elected to the Executive Committee in 1989 and served as an officer for six years before becoming President in 1999, serving the traditional two year term.

In addition to his work with the MGA, Joe served the game in many capacities.  He was a long-time member of Hempstead Golf and Country Club and a former club president.  He was active with the Long Island Golf Association, where he also served as president.  Mr. Cantwell was a chairman of the MGA’s charitable Foundation and was a generous supporter of the Foundation’s many junior golf activities.  He was also a supporter of the Long Island Caddie Scholarship Fund and served on their Board of Directors until the time of his death.

Mr. Cantwell was a widely regarded expert on the Rules of Golf and he served at countless MGA championships as well as dozens of USGA national championships.  Former MGA Tournament Director, Gene Westmoreland, who worked with Mr. Cantwell for many years said, “Joe was passionate about the Rules of Golf and Championship Golf and was one of the MGA’s most knowledgeable and dedicated officials.”

In 2006, he received the MGA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.  Current Association president, Steve Boyd, reflected, “Joe Cantwell was a fine gentleman who served the MGA and the game of golf with great distinction.  The Association is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers, but Joe’s contributions over so many years were truly extraordinary.  He will be missed by his many friends in golf.”
