Angelillo Leads Met Amateur On-Site Qualifying

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (July 30, 2015) – On-site qualifying for match play is halfway finished for the Met Amateur, following the completion of the morning round on Baltusrol’s Upper Course. Six players carded under-par rounds in the morning, led by Gregg Angelillo’s 3-under 68.

Angelillo is competing in his first-ever Met Amateur, and as a Baltusrol member the occasion is very meaningful. “It was on my calendar when I found out it was going to be here and I really focused on it a lot,” he expressed. “I feel like I should represent our club in this tournament. It was a goal of mine, so I’m really happy to be here.”

Despite a couple of early bogeys, Angelillo turned it around quickly beginning with a birdie on the fourth hole. “On four I almost hit it in the hole and that’s when it started. I just started making a lot of birdies.”

Angelillo really picked it up as he made the turn, birdieing holes seven through nine. He added two more birdies on his inward nine, while making one more bogey for the score of 68.

“I think I drove it well. I didn’t miss many fairways and I was able to be on greens, which is a benefit here,” Angelillo said. “If you were able to have a putter in your hand, you were able to make some pars, and I made some birdies today too. So it was a good round for me.”

Luke Graboyes of Twin Brooks heads to the afternoon just one shot off the pace. Graboyes bogeyed the second hole, but responded with back-to-back birdies on holes four and five. He then added four birdies on the final nine, but also had a bogey and double bogey for the round of 69.

Ryan Snouffer of Panther Valley, Jared Mactas of Paramount, Jeremy Wall of Manasquan River, and Sam Bernstein of Century also recorded sub-par rounds at 1-under 70.

“I made some pretty good length putts out there,” reported Snouffer. “Overall I feel pretty solid. I’m hitting fairways and I’m hitting greens and I’m confident on the shots going in. I’m confident with the flat stick, so I’m expecting good things for the afternoon as well.”

Following a brief delay due to heavy rains, competitors have returned to the course for the final 18 holes of qualifying. The top 16 players will then advance to match play, which will be played for the remainder of the championship.
