Met Area Juniors to Compete in Drive, Chip & Putt Championship Finals
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (April 1, 2016) – Four Met Area juniors will have the experience of a lifetime this Sunday, April 3, when they take part in the National Finals of the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club.
Kyra Cox of South Salem, N.Y., Tiya Chowdary of Montgomery, N.J., Sam O’Hara of New York City and Jack St. Ledger of Little Falls, N.J., all advanced through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying to earn their way to the finals. In all, 80 juniors have advanced to the finals where they will accumulate points in all three skills (Drive, Chip & Putt) to determine a champion for in each of four age categories in boys and girls divisions.
Local qualifying for the 2016 finals began last May at more than 250 sites throughout all 50 states. In each age/gender category, only three juniors advanced to sub-regional qualifying from the local stage. Then, at the 50 sub-regional sites, just two juniors advanced in each age/gender category. Ten sites hosted regional qualifiers, with one junior advancing to the finals from each age/gender category from every venue.
Each of the four Met Area finalists competed at a different local site: Cox (14-15 age group) at Knollwood Country Club, Chowdary (12-13) at New Jersey National Golf Club, O’Hara (10-11) at Colonial Springs Golf Club and St. Ledger (7-9) at Neshanic Valley Golf Course. Cox and O’Hara were then successful at Bethpage State Park, while and Chowdary and St. Ledger continued their road at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club. All four then advanced to the finals by winning their age/gender division at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
The National Finals will be broadcast live on Golf Channel from Augusta National on Sunday, April 3 beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
