Steve Scott Medals at Old Westbury U.S. Open LQR

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (May 10, 2016) – Old Westbury Golf and Country Club gave way for six players to advance through a Local Qualifying Round for the 2016 U.S. Open. Those who qualified will move forward to the Sectional Qualifying Round at Canoe Brook Country Club (North & South), in Summit, N.J., on Monday, June 6. Two alternates were also designated.

Paramount Country Club Head Professional Steve Scott of New City, N.Y., earned medalist honors shooting a 2-under 70. Scott made the turn at 3-over, but a strong back nine consisting of 5 birdies propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. This is the fourth year in a row that Scott has qualified for a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier and is looking forward to competing at Canoe Brook, where he will be able to use the course knowledge he gained from his time as an Assistant Professional there.

Close behind was amateur William Wears of Durham, NC, who clinched a 20-foot birdie putt on 18 to secure his spot at even par 72. Also at 72 was 2008 Ike Champion and Web.com Tour player Kevin Foley of Jupiter, FL and 2015 Ike Championship runner-up and 2015 Mittelmark Invitational Champion Stewart Hagestad (amateur) of Newport Beach, CA who both earned spots in the Sectional Qualifier.

At 2-over 74, Joshua Rackley of Wilmington, NC, who recently moved to the area and is an Assistant Professional at Tam O’Shanter Golf Club, grabbed the 5th qualifying spot heading into sectional qualifying.

After shooting a 3-over 75 in regulation, 2015 Ike champion Cameron Young (amateur) of Scarborough, N.Y. earned the final qualifying spot in a 5-for-1 playoff after a par-5 eagle the first playoff hole.

Amateur Johnson Ko of Manhasset, N.Y. earned the first alternate qualifying spot and amateur John Flaherty of Glastonbury, Conn. earned the second qualifying spot.

Old Westbury played to a par 72 at 7,006 yards for a starting field of 114 players.

The remaining local qualifiers conducted by the MGA are on Wednesday, May 11, at Bethpage State Golf Course (Red) in Farmingdale, N.Y., Thursday, May 12, at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J., Monday, May 16, at Willow Ridge Country Club in Rye, N.Y., and Tuesday, May 17, at Panther Valley Golf & Country Club in Allamuchy Township, N.Y.
