Frizalone leads 19 qualifiers for 70th MGA Public Links from Bethpage

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (June 13, 2017) – Qualifying for the 70th MGA Public Links Championship, the nation’s oldest public links championship, continued Tuesday at Bethpage State Park's Blue Course. A total of 19 players qualified for the one-day, 36-hole championship, which will take place at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg, N.J., on July 6.

Taking medalist honors with a 3-under 69 was rising St. Thomas Aquinas junior Michael Frizalone of Bethpage State Park. Frizalone took advantage of the par fivess, birdieing three of Bethpage Blue’s four par fives. Frizalone turned 1-under with a 35 and continued his hot play with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 for a second nine 34.

Just one shot back, posting 2-under 70’s were Jason Zaretsky of Douglaston, Matthew Jackson of Golf Performance Center and Chris Lambrou of Lido.

The remaining sub-par round of the day came from Marc Coleman of Nassau Players Club shooting a 1-under 71 thanks to a front nine 32 (started on 10) which included five birdies.

Shooting an even par 72 was Ryan Hom of Nassau Players Club.

Posting 1-over 73’s were Jason Kondra of Bethpage State Park and Sean Cavanaugh of MGA Eclub-Long Island.

At 2-over 74 was Greg Noone of Timber Point.

Coming in at 3-over 75 were Russ Aue of Nassau Players, Richard Sneider of Kings Park Golf Association, Stephen Valahovic of Darlington, Charles Bast of Stonebridge, Chris Miller of MGA Eclub-Long Island, and David Prowler and Gary Cohan, both of Bethpage State Park.

Grabbing the remaining spots at 4-over 76 were David Shepherd of Crab Meadow, Justin Lomenzo of Nassau Players and Alexander Kang of Harbor Links.

Bethpage played to a par 72 at 6,642 yards.

The MGA will conduct three more qualifying rounds for the 70th MGA Public Links Championship. The next takes place June 14 at Darlington Golf Club in Mahwah, N.J.
