Past MGA president and two-time MGA Senior Amateur champion Al Small is in the field after qualifying in South Carolina. Small made a quick trip to the Met Area early this week, and we had a chance to catch up (linked above) with Small to talk about his experience and expectations leading into the event—his 23rd USGA championship.

Seventeen-time MGA champion George Zahringer III of Deepdale is also in the field, looking to contend with the country’s best senior competitors.

Professionals in the field include reigning Met Open and Senior Open champions, Mark Brown of Tam O’Shanter and Jim McGovern of White Beeches. Brown is competing in his second straight major, having played in and made the cut last month at the Senior PGA Championship. Mark McCormick of Suburban is also in the field.

The inaugural U.S. Senior Open was conducted on the East Course of Winged Foot Golf Club in 1981.
