Swift leads Met Open qualifiers from Silver Spring

RIDGEFIELD, Conn. (August 7, 2017) – Qualifying for the 102nd Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway continued Monday at Silver Spring Country Club, as 11 competitors advanced to the August 22-24 event at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J. CJ Swift of Winged Food led the field, setting a new course record with an 8-under 63.

Swift’s round included seven birdies, plus and eagle on the par-five 11th hole, which resulted in the lowest tournament score ever recorded at the course in its current state.

David McGovern of Brooklake and recent Met Amateur semifinalist James Nicholas of Deepdale fired matching 4-under 67’s to advance to the championship as well. Qualifying at 1-under 70 was Geoff Gelderman of Fairchild Wheeler.

A seven-way tie for fifth at 1-over 72 rounded out the qualifiers, as spots were available for the top nine finishers and ties. Recent U.S. Amateur qualifier Gerry Mackedon of Port Jefferson, and fellow amateurs Michael Savitt of Century and MGA eClub – Long Island member Sean Cavanaugh advanced, as did professionals Gregory Bisconti of The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, David Young of Sleepy Hollow, Wally Gonzalez of Golf Performance Center and Cameron Mackay.

Silver Spring played to 6,637 yards as a par 71 for a starting field of 94.

The final qualifying round for the 102nd Met Open will take place August 8 at Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J.
