Pierson Wins his 2nd Mid-Amateur

The 2016 Mid Amateur Championship came to a close on Wednesday evening, marking the end of this year’s tournament season for the Westchester Golf Association. Played over two days, the Mid Am Championship brought together 57 of the area’s best amateurs aged 25 or older at the beautiful Trump National Golf Club - Hudson Valley on October 17th and 18th. The course lived up to its reputation as players were raving about superb conditions and immaculate greens, and not to mention the perfect fall backdrop.

John Crowley (Round Hill) got off to a fast start on Tuesday with a solid one-over round of 73 in the morning.  As the day went on, the wind picked up, making club selection key, and greens tougher to catch a piece of. Pat Pierson (Hollow Brook) managed his way through the wind, and also shot one-over 73 to tie Crowley for the lead after day 1.  1st Time WGA Participant, Mark Vassalotti (Sterling Farms) rounded out the top 3, and joined Crowley & Pierson in the final group on Day 2, after shooting a two-over 74 in Round 1.  The scoring average for the first round was 82.7.

Day 2 featured much of the same, as the wind was in play once again.  The course played one shot easier, with a scoring average of 81.5 for the day, however some were still able to produce impressive scores. Germay Medina (Pelham Bay/Split Rock) had the low round of the day shooting 71 (-1) which included four birdies on the day. Medina’s fine play put him at a two round total of 152 and tied for second place for the tournament. Also finishing in a tie for second place was 2016 Trump Hudson Valley Club Champion, John Vignola.  John played a steady second day of golf, in which he shot an even par 72, which included 1 eagle and 3 birdies.  Rounding out the tie for 2nd was last years defending champion, David Weisfeld (Hudson National).

In the last group, both Vassalotti & Crowley struggled a bit on their front nines, and that left the door open for Pierson, who shot a one-under 35 on his front-nine, and had a 6-stroke lead at the turn.  Pat stayed out of trouble on the back, and finished with a 2-over 74, a two day total of 147, and a 5-shot victory.  This is Pat's second WGA Mid-Amateur Championship (2014, Rockrimmon).

In the Team Competition, we had a tie at 315 between Team Trump-HV & Team Sterling Farms.  After a grueling match of cards, it was decided that Team Trump-HV, (John Vignola & Brian Nurse), took home top honors.  Team Sterling Farms (Mark Vassalotti & Randall Keleher), took second place.
