The MGA Junior Player of the Year Award was introduced in 2017 to recognize excellence among the junior competitors in the Met Area. With Callaway’s support, the Junior Player of the Year award honors a player age 18 or younger who has performed the best in a given golf season, with an emphasis on the MGA’s two premier junior events – the Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife and the Carter Cup. Similar to the MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award, a season-long points race determines the Junior Player of the Year, with the season concluding by September 15 each year.
Luke Sample of New York, N.Y., had a record-setting season as the first-ever player to win both the Met Junior and Met Open championships in the same season. Sample became the eighth amateur to claim the Met Open and at 17 years old became the youngest-ever player to hoist the Walker L. Trammell Trophy. His two victories clearly established him as the 2020 recipient of the MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway Golf.
