Qualifying Begins for 95th Long Island Open
Cutchogue N.Y. (May 14, 2019) - The first of two Long Island Open Sectional Qualifying Rounds took place on Tuesday at North Fork Country Club. A field of 62 players coming from various clubs across Long Island competed on a chilly Tuesday morning in hopes to quality for the 95th Long Island Open at Hempstead Country Club, starting on June 4th.
With ten qualifying positions (plus ties) available at North Fork, Eric Brelowski of Piping Rock led the field with a 4-under 67 to earn medalist honors.Two shots behind him was Erik Easton of The Bridge with a 2-under 69. A total of 16 golfers qualified.
Three competitors carded scores of even-par 71: 14-year-old amatuer Thomas Finn of Nassau, Shaun Clark of Elevee Golf, and amateur Rick Messina of Sands Point. Three amateurs earned a spot in the championship field with scores of 1-over 72: Kurt Paseka of Lake Success, Dominic Formato of North Hills, and Will Rand of East Hampton. Eight more competitors rounded out the qualifying positions with scores of 2-over 73: Matthew Sweeney (a) of Bethpage, John Igoe of Bethpage, Corey Layton of Atlantic, John Sanges of Rockaway Hunting, James Lichtenberger of Colonial Springs, Andrew Goldman (a) of Lake Success, Lucas Cromeenes of Maidstone, and Nick Banks of St. George's.
The Par 71 course located on the East end of Long Island played 6,193 yards, challenging competitors to put the ball in the right spot to avoid trouble. The second and final Long Island Open qualifier will be held on Tuesday May 21st (postponed from the original date of May 13) at The Golf Club at Middle Bay in Oceanside.
