Gibstein Claims Arthur Weber Memorial Senior Amateur

Old Westbury

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (October 18, 2019) -- Edward Gibstein of Glen Head Country Club added a 2-over-par 74 to his previous day's 73 to shoot 147 and win the 2019 Arthur Weber Memorial Senior Amateur Championship at Old Westbury Golf & Country Club on Friday. His closest pursuer, Gary Spector of Inwood Country Club, finished four shots behind and Dennis Lynch of the Nassau Players Club and Jay Sessa of the Cherry Valley Club tied for third, one shot further back. Both days featured cool and windy fall conditions, but the course itself was in terrific shape, as good as anyone involved had ever seen it.

Gibstein and Lynch began the day tied atop the leader board, but Gibstein took a two shot lead on the fourth hole of the Overlook nine when he made birdie to Lynch's bogey on the par four. He maintained that lead at the turn. On the first hole of the Woods nine, Lynch made birdie four and Gibstein three-putted for bogey, leaving them tied once again.

From that point, however, Gibstein played his final eight holes in a solid 1-over-par (one birdie, 2 bogeys), while Lynch could not maintain the pace. Spector's closing 1-under-par 35 on the Woods nine (the best nine hole score of the tournament) enabled him to nip Lynch and Sessa for second at the wire.

The players and the officials of the Long Island Golf Association wish to thank the members and employees of Old Westbury for their unceasing hospitality as the club that permanently hosts this event.
