Svoboda, Beddow Share Long Island Open Lead
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (June 5, 2019) -- Following his 4-under 67 opening round, defending Long Island Open champion Andrew Svoboda of Engineers carded a 1-under 70 at Hempstead Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. He'll enter Thursday's final round joined atop the leaderboard by Nick Beddow of Nassau Country Club, who has fired rounds of 68-69 and stands as the only player with a pair of scores in the 60s.
A total of 41 players made the 36-hole cut with scores of 5-over 147 or better. Eight players have played the opening 36 holes in red figures and remain within striking distance entering the final 18 holes of play.
Josh Rackley of Tam O'Shanter Club and Timothy Rosenhouse of Engineers sit just one shot back with 4-under totals, while Anthony Aruta of North Shore rounds out the top five on the leader board at 3-under 139. Kyle Brey stands solo sixth at 2-under 140, while Danny Balin of Fresh Meadow and Michael Furci of West Sayville cap off the players under par.
On Thursday, Svoboda is aiming to become the first player to successfully defend the Long Island Open title since Mike Meehan did so in 2008-09.
