17 Competitors Advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Round

On Monday, the MGA conducted its first three of five local qualifying rounds for the 2018 U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. In all, 17 competitors punched their ticket to the sectional qualifying round.


SPRING LAKE, N.J. (May 7, 2018) – Amateur Jack Wall of nearby Brielle, N.J., led the field of 70 players with a score of 3-under 68 as he took the first of four advancing positions in the U.S. Open local qualifying round at Spring Lake Golf Club.

Wall, 17, is a junior at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) where he has had a successful spring season so far, winning individual and team titles for CBA at the Monmouth County Tournament and the Shore Conference Tournament. This will be his first time advancing to the sectional qualifying level, but he can turn to his older brother Ethan for advice, as he competed in sectional qualifying in 2013 in Purchase, N.Y.

PGA TOUR player Roberto Diaz of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., advanced with a 2-under 69. Diaz made it into the field of the 2017 U.S. Open when Phil Mickelson withdrew, and has made the cut at three TOUR events so far this year. He was the first alternate from the Summit, N.J., sectional qualifier last year.

Amateur Chris Gotterup of Little Silver, N.J., currently completing his freshman year at Rutgers, also advanced after carding a 1-under 70. Gotterup was a former standout at CBA and teammate of Wall.

Three players finished at even-par 71 to force a playoff for the final qualifying position. Veteran MGA competitor amateur Mike Stamberger, also of Brielle, N.J., parred the first playoff hole to advance. On the third playoff hole, Dan O’Rourke of Milford, N.J., made par to finish as the first alternate. Amateur Brian Whitman of Tinton Falls, N.J., took the second alternate.

Spring Lake Golf Club played at 6,438 yards at par 71.


WEST ORANGE, N.J. (May 7, 2018) – A starting field of 144 competitors battled for eight advancing positions, Monday, in a U.S. Open local qualifying round at Essex County Country Club.

Max Greyserman, a New Jersey native now residing in Boca Raton, Fla., earned medalist honors on the day after an afternoon round of 5-under 66. Greyserman started his round off quickly, carding birdies on three of the first five and making the turn in 3-under.

Philippines native and Seton Hall junior Gen Nagai came in close behind following a 4-under 67.

Four players safely earned spots in the sectional qualifying round with rounds of 2-under 69: Brian Mackey of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.; Pat Wilson, of Andover, N.J.; and amateurs Ryan Davis of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; and Cameron Young, of Scarborough, N.Y. Wilson is looking to a return trip to the U.S. Open after competing in 2016 at Chambers Bay.

A five-for-two playoff was needed in order to determine the final qualifiers, with amateurs James Nicholas of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Lloyd Jefferson Go of Cebu City, Philippines, earning the final two qualifying spots.

Professionals Brett Jones of Basking Ridge, N.J., earned the first alternate spot while Tyler Hall of Wayne, N.J., was designated second alternate.

Essex County played to a par 71 at 6,807 yards.


SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (May 7, 2018) – Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., shot 4-under 66 on Monday to lead five competitors in advancing from a U.S. Open local qualifying round at Southampton Golf Club.

Qualifying along with Lowe out of the 88 competitors were Timothy Hegarty of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., with a 67, Michael Furci of Sayville, N.Y., with a 68 and both Lucas Cromeenes of Metropolis, Ill., and Darin Goldstein of New York, N.Y., who both shot 69.

Jason Caron of Greenlawn, N.Y., took the first alternate position, while Rob Corcoran of Melbourne, Fla., took the second alternate position.

The MGA's final two U.S. Open LQRs will take place Tuesday, May 8 at Mount Kisco Country Club in Mount Kisco, N.Y., and Wednesday, May 16 at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y. The MGA then conducts a U.S. Open sectional qualifying round on Monday, June 4 at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.
