Quagliano Captures 34th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship Title

RUMSON, N.J.--After two long days of tournament tough golf, the 34th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship came to an end with 15-year-old Michael Quagliano of White Plains, NY, crowned the 2002 Champion and Ryan Shallcross of Westfield, New Jersey, the runner-up.  Today’s Boys Championship was sponsored by MetLife for the 18th consecutive year. Quagliano notched his second victory of the week after winning the WGA Boys Championship on Tuesday.  He also made headlines earlier this month by breaking the amateur course record at his home course of Knollwood Country Club with an eight-under par 63.  Quagliano was also medalist at the WGA Open qualifier held at Knollwood shooting a 1-under-par 70 to best a group of 176 club professionals and top-notch amateurs.  Ryan Shallcross also came off a recent win at the Union County Amateur Championship. Quagliano defeated Shallcross, 2 and 1, with steady play throughout at Rumson Country Club in Rumson, NJ.

Although Quagliano only had two birdies to Shallcross’s three, Quagliano was able to defeat him with steady play, making only one bogey in the match.  Quagliano started out strong with a birdie on the second and never looked back, as he pared the next 7 to finish the nine 1 up.  Shallcross faltered a little with a bogey five on the 13th to go 2-down, but he quickly came back with a birdie two on 14 to get back to only 1-down.  However, Quagliano finally closed out the match with a par 3 on the 17th hole to go 2 up.

Earlier this morning in the semifinal round, Quagliano defeated Brandon Mitchell, of Port Jefferson, NY, 4 & 2.  Shallcross eliminated Brendon Tracy, of New York, NY, in a grueling 22-hole match to earn his shot at the title.  Shallcross defeated Tracy with a par five on the fourth hole of the playoff.
