Svoboda defeated in Semifinals of the British Amateur

ST. ANDREW’S, SCOTLAND-Lee Corfield of Burnham & Berrow, England sank a birdie putt on the 18th hole to defeat Winged Foot’s Andrew Svoboda in the semifinal of the British Amateur Championship at the Old Course in St. Andrew’s, Scotland.

Corfield seemed to have the match well in hand on the 17th, the famous “road hole.” With the match all square and Svoboda in the historically difficult road hole bunker, Corfield needed just two putts for victory. However, after watching Svoboda play his bunker shot backwards towards the fairway, then proceed to get up and down for bogey, Corfield three-putted bringing the match to the 18th hole.

After two drives in the middle of the fairway, Corfield knocked his approach shot close enough for birdie that Svoboda couldn’t match, ending his run at the prestigious championship.

Svoboda was attempting to become the first Met Area golfer to win the British Amateur since Century’s Dick Siderowf who won twice in 1973 &1976.

Svoboda defeated Mark Halliday of Aberdeen, Scotland to advance to the semifinal match against Corfield. In earlier matches he ousted Ryan Tipping of South Africa in 21 holes, Matthew Cryer of Coventry, England 4&3, and Carnoustie’s Keir McNicoll 2&1.
