Winged Foot to Host 3rd "Carter Cup" MGA Junior Stroke Play Invitational Championship

Mamaroneck, N.Y. - The 3rd annual “Carter Cup”, the MGA’s Junior Stroke Play Invitational Championship, heads to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY, on Wednesday, August 3rd, where a field of 51 talented and determined juniors will play 18-holes on each of Winged Foot’s East and West Courses to compete for a title that has quickly established itself as one of the most prestigious in all of junior golf.   Traditionally held on the Upper and Lower courses of Baltusrol Golf Club, Winged Foot, site of the 2006 US Open, will play host this year as Baltusrol readies itself for the 2005 PGA Championship on August 11-14.

The Carter Cup is an invitational event open to juniors who have not reached 19 years of age.  It was named in honor of 20-year-old Michael J. Carter, an accomplished junior player and standout member of the Delbarton School golf team who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2002.   Carter was also junior club champion at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot Golf Clubs and was an up-and-coming golf team member at Penn State.

Last year’s champion, Patrick Fillian of Tinton Falls, NJ, who has turned 19, will not be able to defend his title. Included in this year’s strong field however, are 2005 MGA Junior champion Gene Yang of East Brunswick, NJ, 2005 runner-up Jeff Pike of Rye, NY, 2004 MGA/MetLife Boys champion Sun-Ho Kim of Flushing, NY, 2003 MGA/MetLife Boys champion Mark Costanza of Upper Saddle River, NJ and inaugural “Carter Cup” champion Brendan Tracy of New York, NY.  Also joining the field are 2002 MGA/MetLife Boys champion Johnny Schiano of Holbrook, NY, 2004 MGA/MetLife Boy’s runner-up Tim Pawul of East Sekauket, NY, 2005 New Jersey Junior champion Morgan Hoffman of Wyckoff, NJ, and Ryan Schallcross of Westfield, NJ, Matthew Belizze of North Salem, NY, and Chris Scialo of New City, NY, all top 10 finishers in the 2004 Carter Cup.

In addition to the magnificent silver trophy awarded to the 2005 champion, this year’s winner will earn an exemption to the 2006 Ike Championship at Fresh Meadow Country Club, Lake Success, NY.

Real time scoring, provided by TPP, will be featured on the MGA's website, www.mgagolf.org. For more information on this year’s Championship contact Lou Cutolo or Jeff Carroll of the MGA at (914) 347-4653.
