Kestner, 52, Leads U.S. Open Local Qualifiers at Scarsdale

 

Hartsdale, N.Y. - Nine golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2005 U.S. Open during local qualifying held Monday, May 16, at Scarsdale Golf Club in Hartsdale, NY.

Leading the way was three-time  MGA Met Open champion Darrell Kestner, 52, of  Deepdale who fired a sizzling five under par 67 (33-34) to lead the field of 160 professionals and amateurs on a sunny day in Westchester County, NY.  In second place with a four under par 68, was Brian Lamberti of NeveleGrand followed by two-time Met Open champion Bobby Heins, 53, of Old Oaks who posted a three-under par 69.  Carl Alexander, of GC of Purchase, James Burke of Montammy and Charles Meola of Mahopac also qualified with rounds of 70.  Five players posting 71’s played off for the remaining three spots with Joe Horowitz of Lido, Johnny Clarizio of Scarsdale and Dave Fusco of Patriot Hills advancing to the Sectional Qualifying.   

Today’s event was the second of four U.S. Open local qualifying rounds conducted by the Metropolitan Golf Association.  The event is open to both professional and amateur golfers with a handicap index of 1.4 or better.  Today’s qualifiers advance to the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying round scheduled for June 6, at Canoe Brook CC (North & South) in Summit, NJ.  The Sectional qualifying is the final stage before the 105th U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No.2 in Pinehurst, NC, June 13 - 19.
