Port Jefferson Duo Wins MGA/MetLife Women's Net Team

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (October 18, 2011) – First-time champions Jadie Detolla and Linda Bucaria of Port Jefferson @ Harbor Hill posted a sizzling round of twelve-under-par 62 to win the 27th MGA/MetLife Women's Net Team Championship at Hempstead Golf & Country Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The championship, contested in a net better-ball format, is one of the most popular on the MGA calendar. Players competed at 95 percent of their Course Handicap, and the strong field of 32 teams in today’s championship successfully advanced out of three sectional qualifying rounds earlier this season.

Five teams finished with a 64, two strokes behind Detolla and Bucaria, and a match of cards was done to determine the order of finish. Winning the match of cards and earning second-place honors were Margaret Dunne and Helen O’Brien of Dunwoodie Yagaw (Yonkers Amateur Golf Association-Women), and coming in third place were two-time champions (2006 & ’07) Elaine Laux and Monica Riggs of Redding. Defending champions Robin Corwith and Hanneke Gold of Montauk Downs finished tied for 23rd with a 2-under-par 72.

On hand to present the trophy to the winners was Ken Martin of MetLife, which has been the only titles sponsor in the history of this event. The MGA is proud to partner with MetLife in this and other prestigious Met Area championships.

The “Women’s Met Net,” as it is also called, is open to two-woman teams of golfers representing an MGA member club. The players must have handicap indexes between 10.0 and 36.0, with the team total not exceeding 55.0. Hundreds of teams competed at the club level for the right to represent their club at one of the three sectional qualifying rounds held at Salem Golf Club in North Salem, N.Y., Lake Mohawk Golf Club in Sparta, N.J., and Lake Success Golf Club, in Lake Success, N.Y.
