This year’s Carey Cup returns to its home, as Metedeconk hosted the inaugural match in 1990. It was first called the Metedeconk International Challenge Cup, with the teams facing one another again in Ireland in 1992. The event was not held in 1994, but returned in 1996 when the late Governor Hugh L. Carey led efforts to revive the competition. As a proud Irish-American, Carey envisioned using the matches as a way to foster sportsmanship and goodwill between the countries. That tradition has continued every two years since.

The 13th Carey Cup will begin on Monday, October 19 with an “Am-Am” competition, in which each of the Irish and MGA players will be paired with three amateurs in a best ball competition. Official matches start on Tuesday, October 20 with foursome (alternate-shot) matches in the morning and fourball (best ball) matches in the afternoon. The event then wraps up on Wednesday, October 21 with singles matches. All six players from each team compete in every round of play.

Metedeconk presents a unique golfing environment, as the course meanders through forest and utilizes the natural terrain. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Roger Rulewich, the well-placed bunkers, water hazards and subtly contoured greens of Metedeconk are sure to present an outstanding venue for Carey Cup.

While Ireland has held the upper hand in the overall history of the Carey Cup, the MGA is looking to continue its recent success in the event. Ireland owns a 7-4-1 lead overall, but the MGA has taken each of the last two competitions and is 2-1-1 in the last four meetings.

Ireland also sports a roster of its top amateurs, who are undoubtedly looking to return momentum to their side. Representing Ireland this year are: Colm Campbell of Warrenpoint GC, John Ross Galbraith of Whitehead Golf Club, Alex Gleeson of Castle Golf Club, Colin Fairweather of Knock Golf Club, Stuart Grehan of Tullamore Golf Club and Rowan Lester of Hermitage Golf Club. They will be captained by Tony Goode.
