20 advance to Ike in Lake Success qualifier

GREAT NECK, N.Y. (May 23, 2016) -  Alexander Kang of Harbor Links earned medalist honors at today’s Sectional Qualifying Round for the 61st MGA Ike Championship at Lake Success Golf Club in Great Neck, N.Y. Kang carded a cool 7 birdies en route to a final 5-under 65. 

A total of 20 players qualified for the MGA’s stroke play championship on June 27 and 28 at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, N.J.

Only a few strokes behind Kang and the only other play under par today was Jay Sessa of Gardiner’s Bay who finished his round with a 2-under 68.

Matthew Rendell of MGA eClub – NYC and Ed Gibstein of MGA eClub – Long Island both qualified with scores of even par 70.

Seven players shared scores of 1-over 71 to earn a trip to Essex County: Ross Ketner of MGA eClub – Long Island, Obediah Ayton of Rockaway Hunt Club, Jason Zaretsky of Douglaston, Rich Messina of Sands Point, Bryan Pendrick of Mill River, Jack Sheehan of Spook Rock and Johnny Schob of Huntington Crescent will all play in the championship.

Ross Hoffman of Lake Success and Johnson Ko of Bethpage carded scores of 2-over 72 to qualify.

Seven other players took the remaining qualifying positions: Michael Auerbach of Nassau Players, Hunter Semels of North Hempstead, Tyler Gerbavsits of Huntington Crescent, Ross Lehrer of Engineers, Christopher White of Garden City GC, James Nicholas of Winged Foot and Charles Bast of Stonebridge.

Lake Success played to a par 70 at 6,245 yards for the field of 92 players.

The Ike, the MGA’s stroke play championship is a 54 hole event open to amateur golfers with a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.0. Today’s qualifying round was the second of five qualifying rounds throughout the Met Area to determine the final field. The next qualifying round is tomorrow, Tuesday May 24 at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J.
