Formato Leads 45 Qualifiers for Long Island Open
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 14, 2018) – Amateur Dominic Formato of North Hills shot 3-under par 67 on Bethpage State Park’s Red Course on Monday, leading 45 qualifiers at 73 or better in the first Long Island Open qualifier.
Eamonn McLaughlin of Cherry Valley and amateur Michael Lee of Mill River finished two shots behind with rounds of 69, also earning their way to Nassau Country Club for the championship proper, June 5-7. Will Andrew of the Woods at Cherry Creek, Dylan Crowley of Glen Cove and two amateurs, Zachary Shallat of Colonial Springs and Christopher White of Garden City tied at even par 70.
With the top 40 finishers and ties earning spots in the Long Island Open, the list of qualifiers continued with 11 competitors finishing at 1-over-par 71: Nick Beddow of Rockville Links Nick DeFalco of The Creek, Matthew Dubrowski of Westhampton, Jesse Fitzgerald of Garden City Golf Club, Johnson Ko of Harbor Links, Michael Sweeney of The Bridge, and Alex Willey of Fresh Meadow, along with amateurs Andrew Chambers of Maidstone Club, James Mastaglio of Cherry Valley, Frank Meizoso III of Bethpage State Park and John Schob Jr. of Huntington Crescent Club.
Thirteen more players tied for 19th at 2-over 72, while 14 competitors grabbed the final advancing positions by carding 3-over 73s.
The Red Course was set up as a par 70 at 6,789 yards for this qualifier and the weather conditions could not have been more benign for this event: rain over the weekend softened the greens and there was almost no wind for both the first six hours of starting times and the last three hours of play.
The field for the Long Island Open Championship will be completed with the second and final qualifier, Thursday, May 17 at Woodmere Club in Woodmere, N.Y.
