ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 26, 2020) – The 47 juniors set to compete in the 18th Carter Cup will be part of history as the MGA's official Junior Stroke Play Championship takes place at Canoe Brook Country Club for the first time on Wednesday, July 29. The invitational heads to the Summit, N.J., club for the first time as typical host Baltusrol Golf Club has begun a restoration project and usual secondary host Winged Foot Golf Club readies for the U.S. Open in September.

The Carter Cup was first played in 2003 and is named in honor of Michael P. Carter, an accomplished junior player at Baltusrol and standout member of the golf team at New Jersey’s Delbarton School who died in a car accident in 2002. Carter had won the junior club championships at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot, and at the time of his death played for Penn State.

Even with its brief history, the Carter Cup has produced an incredible list of champions, including PGA TOUR player Morgan Hoffmann (2005), and now professionals David Pastore (2010) and Cameron Young (2011). The field once again contains the region's top rising stars, who earned entry to the event based on performance in notable Met Area events.

Weather Woes
The Carter Cup has faced weather woes in recent years, having decided a champion after playing less than 36 holes each of the last three years. The event was shortened to 18 holes in both 2017 and 2019, while 2018 was decided over 27 holes.

Top-10s
Just five players in the field have logged top-10s in the Carter Cup. Edmund Broderick of Bayonne, N.J., has logged a pair in the last two years (T3, T7). Dean Greyserman of Short Hills, N.J., and recent Met Junior runner-up James Allen of Scarsdale, N.Y., also tied third in last year's 18-hole playing, while recent Met Junior champion Luke Sample of New York, N.Y., finished tied for eighth. Charlie Berridge of Scarsdale, N.Y., finished tied seventh in 2018 at Winged Foot.

Canoe Brook Competition
Only Doug Beney of Greenwich, Conn., competed in last year's Ike MGA Stroke Play Championship on Canoe Brook's North Course. Jeffrey Li of Basking Ridge, N.J., had made the field, but withdrew from the championship.

Coming In Hot
Luke Sample backed up his victory in the 103rd Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife on July 15 at Rockaway River Country Club in Denville, N.J., with an impressive five-shot victory in the AJGA Junior at Penn State last week. Zachary Ong (T3), Allen (T8) and Berridge (T11) all posted top finishes in the event as well and will look to carry momentum to Canoe Brook.

Junior-Carter Cup Double
Sample will look to enter elite company by hoisting the Carter Cup, as only three players (Patrick Fillian, David Pastore, Cameron Young) have won both the Junior and Carter Cup titles in their career. Fillian is the only one to claim both in the same season (2004).

Boys-Carter Cup
Cameron Wilson is the only player to have won both the MGA/MetLife Boys and Carter Cup in his career. Either Jud Langille of Ossining, N.Y., or Sample could join Wilson, having won the Boys title in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Sample would be the only player to have ever won all three of the MGA's junior championships in his career.

Carter Cup to Met Amateur
This week traditionally brings a busy schedule to the table for many who go from the Carter Cup to compete in the Met Amateur the following day. This year, nine players will go from Canoe Brook on Wednesday to Bethpage Black on Thursday: Allen, Cole Ekert of Chatham, N.J., Greyserman, Li, Reece Mullahy of Harrison, N.Y., Jackson Murphy of Montauk, N.Y., Sam O'Hara of Rye, N.Y., George Roessler of East Hampton, N.Y., and Sample.

The Race is On
The Carter Cup is another marquee event in the season-long race for the MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway, which is now in its fourth year. The winner will receive 225 points.
