Foundation Spotlight: Will Bornmann

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (Feb 4, 2022) – This past summer, the MGA Foundations cornerstone program, GOLFWORKS, returned to Met Area clubs. In total, 147 GOLFWORKS interns worked at 39 clubs during the summer months, gaining valuable work, golf and life experiences. In addition to the 147 interns participating in MGA programming, 18 former interns were hired directly by clubs, showcasing the relationships forged between intern and club during the GOLFWORKS program. With the season behind us and many interns back in school, we wanted to highlight some of the truly special individuals that make the program as good as it is. Today we get to know Will Bornmann in this GOLFWORKS Q&A.

Q- What club did you work at as a GOLFWORKS intern and what was your role there?

A- I worked at Lake Isle this summer. An average day for me was being a counselor to at least two groups of young campers. We would spend some time practicing on the putting green and the range and sometimes we would go on the course and play a hole as a group.

Q- What surprised you about the experience, or what was something you learned that you didn’t expect?

A- The one thing that was interesting that I learned was the pace at which people learn and how everyone is a bit different. You have to balance the instruction to best cater to every camper.

Q- Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you enjoy doing?

A- At my school I’m involved with the arts. I have been doing a lot of singing and acting. Recently I have started playing golf more too, partly because we have access to the course here which is really nice.

Q- Is this your first job and/or first job in golf? What was your experience like?

A- This is my first job, but I have been around golf for almost 10 years now. I actually started playing golf as a camper here at Lake Isle and have now transitioned to being an instructor. That’s one of the cool things about working here, a lot of the instructors right now used to be campers like me.

Q- What was your favorite part of your job? What did you learn?

A- My favorite part of my job is my coworkers and other instructors. I’ve become friends with most, if not all my coworkers. There are usually two of us working together with a group of campers, so you get to know people really well and that’s a great part of the job. The most important thing that I’ve learned in my time as a GOLFWORKS intern is how to meaningfully communicate important ideas to a group of people. I would say in general I learned and improved upon my communication, patience and leadership skills.

Q- What do you want to do in the future?

A- My dream job would be either an actor or a comedian. I love performing and the experience of entertaining an audience through acting or comedy.
