Competitors Christine Reuss from Staten Island, N.Y. and Julie Piers of Beaconfield, Quebec, Canada, tied at 5-over, 76, to take home medalist honors.

Reuss, the director of instruction at Canoe Brook Country Club, went out in 1-over, 36, and finished with a bogey on 18 to card a 4-over, 40, on the back.

Meanwhile, Piers had the only under-par nine-hole span with a 1-under, 34, on the front before finishing with a 42 on the back for her 76.

“I think that it was great that it was a little misty in the morning because it made the greens receptive and not quite as fast,” said Piers. “As we got going on the back nine and we were peeling off sweaters and it got warmer the greens got a little faster so I think it was a perfect temperature to play golf and the weather helped us.”

The other two golfers who will make the trip to Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club for the U.S. Senior Women’s Open are Kelley Brooke of Belle Harbor, N.Y. and Cindy Reeves of Bedford, N.Y. Brooke, who operates the Golf Channel Academy with Kelley Brooke, narrowly missed qualifying for the inaugural championship last year. Meanwhile, Reeves, a professional at Century Country Club will make her second appearance in the event.

They both carded a 6-over, 77, finishing just one shot ahead of five other golfers tied at 78. Those five tied at 78 played off for two alternant spots.

Wendy Modic of Wilton, Conn., a teaching professional at Fenway Golf Club, earned the first alternant spot while Carolina Hart of Juno Beach, Fla., came away with the second. The playoff was decided on the third playoff hole.

The U.S. Senior Women’s Open takes place May 16 to 19, at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
