Gerbavsits Earns Medalist Honors at Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (May 9, 2022) - Tyler Gerbavsits of Huntington, N.Y., carded a round of 1-under 69 to earn low-medalist honors at Monday’s U.S. Open Local Qualifying Round at Southampton Golf Club.

“The wind was up all day, and it just got worse throughout the round,” Gerbavsits said. “I kept my head down and told myself to keep the ball down the middle, swing easy, and try to post a low round.”

Gerbavists is heading back to U.S. Open Final-Stage Qualifying for a second straight year, only this time as an automatic qualifier, not as an alternate.

“It feels great. I’m really excited, because last year I had gotten in as an alternate and did not have experience at either course,” Gerbavsits explained. “To have that year under my belt is huge. Hopefully I can keep up this good play and something special can happen, we’ll see.”

Nicholas Maccario of Waltham, Mass., and Lucas Spahl of Dudley, Mass., both recorded rounds of even par to finish in a tie for second place and secure automatic qualifying spots. Clancy Waugh of North Palm Beach, Fla., claimed the fourth automatic qualifying spot, shooting 1-over 71.

“I hit a lot of really good mid to long irons out there,” Spahl said. “I made the turn at 3-over and my caddy and I looked at each other and we said well, its time we get it going and see what we can do on the back nine.”

“With the U.S. Open being in our home state, I live about 10 minutes from The Country Club, so it would be awesome,” Maccario said. “It would be an amazing opportunity just to reach the final stage of qualifying.”

With five players finishing at 2-over, a playoff was needed to determine the final three qualifiers and two alternate positions.

The playoff was held on the first hole, a par four. Gerald Mackedon made birdie to claim one of the final three qualifying spots. Colby Anderson and Matthew Lowe both made pars to claim the final two automatic qualifying spots.

Cian Curley made bogey on the first hole to secure the first alternate spot. Max Silverman made double bogey to grab the second and final alternate spot.

Final Qualifying in the Met Area will be held on Monday, June 6 at Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club.
