Live From: 18th Carter Cup

James Allen

SUMMIT, N.J. (July 29, 2020) -- Clutch play down the stretch from James Allen led the Scarsdale, N.Y., native to capture a two-shot victory, Wednesday, in the 18th Carter Cup at Canoe Brook Country Club. Allen fired a 4-under 68 in the morning on the South Course before backing that up with a 3-under 69 on the North Course, allowing him to edge Cole Ekert of Chatham, N.J., by two shots.

Allen made eagle-three on the 12th hole to tie Ekert at 5-under overall. But, a lengthy birdie putt on the par-4 15th and another from inside five feet on the par-4 17th helped propel him to victory.

Full recap to follow.

The Carter Cup was first played in 2003 and is named in honor of Michael P. Carter, an accomplished junior player at Baltusrol and standout member of the golf team at New Jersey’s Delbarton School who died in a car accident in 2002. Carter had won the junior club championships at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot, and at the time of his death played for Penn State.

The invitational is taking place at Canoe Brook Country Club for the first time, as traditional host Baltusrol has begun a renovation and typical substitute host Winged Foot prepares to host the U.S. Open in September.
