The first hole served as the only hole Fleming would surrender in the morning match against Canada's Marie-Therese Torti. Fleming squared the match with a victory on the par-five sixth, then proceded to win Nos. 9, 13, and 16 en route to a 3-and-2 victory.

In the afternoon, Sue Wooster of Australia started quickly out of the gates by winning the first four holes. While Fleming battled back to win three of the next seven holes, Wooster's early lead stood as too much to overcome. A birdie on the par-four 14th trimmed Fleming's deficit to two, but three consecutive ties led to Wooster taking the 2-and-1 victory.

UPDATE (August 26, 2019) -- Tara Fleming of Jersey City, N.J., remains as the lone Met Area representative competing in either the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur or U.S. Senior Amateur following her Round of 64 victory on Monday at Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Fleming, 52 and a semifinalist in the 2017 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, gathered a quick lead against Amy Ellerton of Free Union, Va., by winning the first two holes. While Ellerton won the next, Fleming won Nos. 9-10 to push her lead to 3-up. Ellerton didn't go without a fight, as she won the 170-yard, par-3 12th, but Fleming responded by winning consecutive holes for the third time in the match. A tie on the par-5 15th earned Fleming the 4-and-3 victory and a Round of 32 match up on Tuesday against Canada's Marie-Therese Torti, slated for 10:15 a.m., Eastern.

Former New Jersey resident and 2009 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur champion Sherry Herman had also advanced to match play, but lost her opening round contest against Maggie Leef of Pewaukee, Wis., 4-and-3.

Meanwhile, at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C., Ned Zachar of GlenArbor dropped a hard-fought, 2-and-1 match against Jerry Rose of Sarasota, Fla. Rose won Nos. 2-4 to earn a 3-up advantage and though Zachar won the 220-yard, par-3 7th, Rose won Nos. 10-11 to push the advantage to four. Zachar remained determined though, winning the next two holes with threes--a par and a birdie. Rose remained steady down the stretch though and pars for both players over the next four holes earned Rose the right to advance.
