McGovern, Zachar and Detemple Qualify for U.S. Senior Open

Union, N.J. (May 24, 2018) - Jim McGovern of Oradell, N.J., led the field of 144 players with a score of 4-under 67 to take the first of three qualifying positions for the 2018 U.S. Senior Open today at Suburban Golf Club.

The head professional at White Beeches Golf and Country Club carded six birdies to lead him to his medalist finish. This will be McGovern's third appearance in the U.S. Senior Open, he also qualified in 2017 and 2015. He's competed in 10 U.S. Opens, and most recently won the 2016 MGA Senior Open and last year's NJPGA Senior Match Play Championship.

A playoff was needed to determine the final two qualifiers after three players finished the day at 2-under 69. Amateurs Ned Zachar of Bedford, N.Y., and Peter Detemple of Lexington Park, Md., qualified after two playoff holes. This is Zachar's first U.S. Senior Open, in 2017 he qualified for and advanced to match play at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

John Elliot of Westerly, R.I., finished as the first alternate. Angel Franco of Palm City, Fla., carded a 1-under 71 and is the second alternate.

Suburban Golf Club played to at 6,473 yards at par 71.

The 2018 U.S. Senior Open Championship will be played at The Broadmoor Golf Club (East Course) in Colorado Springs, Colo., on June 28-July 1.
