Meehan Leads Four U.S. Senior Open Qualifiers from Bonnie Briar

LARCHMONT, N.Y. (May 21, 2019) - Michael Meehan of Bayville, N.Y., led the field with a 2-under 69 to earn medalist honors in U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifying at Bonnie Briar Country Club, Tuesday.

Meehan, the 50-year-old head professional at Old Westbury Golf and Country Club, made three birdies with one bogey to earn his first appearance in the U.S. Senior Open. "I don't necessarily look ahead, but this is probably the first date, as soon as it came out, I looked ahead to and worked my whole practice schedule around today. So, it would obviously be a big deal," noted Meehan after his round while waiting to see how his score would hold up.

Thomas Levet of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., finished the day with a 1-under 70 to earn the second qualifying spot. Levet, a six-time winner on the European Tour who will be playing in the Senior PGA Championship later this week, will participate in his first U.S. Senior Open.

Scott Paris of Westfield, N.J. carded a one-over 72 in the morning to grab the third qualifying spot. This will be the first major event Paris will compete in.

A  7-for-1 playoff was needed to determine the final qualifying spot, with Kevin Vandenberg of Pulaski, N.Y., making par on the second playoff hole to solidify his spot in the U.S. Senior Open.

Taking the first alternate spot was Shaun Powers of Greenwich, Conn., and the second alternate spot was taken by Mike Caporale of Manhasset, N.Y.

Bonnie Briar Country Club played to 6,210 yards at par 71. The 2019 U.S. Senior Open will be played at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on June 27-30. For complete U.S. Senior Open Coverage, please visit usga.org.
