Han & Wall's Runs End in U.S. Junior Amateur

UPDATE (July 17, 2019) -- Met Area junior standouts Jack Wall of Brielle, N.J., and Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y., dropped their Round of 32 matches on Thursday in the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Wall and Han both fell by 3-and-2 margins against their respective opponents Bo Jin of China and Brian Ma of Mlpitas, Calif. Jin jumped out to a three-hole lead through four holes against Wall and held Wall to just two hole wins on the day. Wall claimed the 15th hole with a par-four to extend the match, but a tie on the following hole finished his run in the championship. Han, meanwhile, fell into a six-hole deficit through 11, before winning his first hole of the day with par on the 223-yard one-shotter. Han added back-to-back wins on Nos. 14-15, but Jin closed out the match after the two tied the 16th.

Wall, the reigning winner of the MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway, will attend University of Columbia in the fall while Han is slated to attend Columbia University.


UPDATE (July 17, 2019) -- After advancing to match play in the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, both Jack Wall of Brielle, N.J., and Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y., advanced after notching wins in their respective Round of 64 matches, Wednesday.

Han and Wall followed up rounds in the mid-70s with rounds of 70 and 69, respectively to finish at 3-over par 145 and finish tied for 23rd in the on-site qualifying.

Han garnered the No. 24 seed and despite falling three holes down through seven, mounted a comeback to claim a 1-up victory over Jack Townsend of San Diego, Calif. The two traded holes on Nos. 9-10, but Han won Nos. 12-14 and No. 16 to quickly grab his first lead of the match. Ties on the final two holes earned Han the victory and a Round of 32 match against Brian Ma of Milpitas, Calif.

Wall, taking the No. 25 seed, stood tied against Ben Brogdon of Little Rock, Ark., through seven holes before winning three in a row. Brogdon won back-to-back holes on Nos. 13-14, but a par-four for Wall on the 481-yard 17th landed the South Carolina commit a 2-and-1 victory. Wall faces Bo Jin of China in the Round of 32.

Should both Han and Wall win their matches Thursday morning, the pair would square off against one another in the afternoon's Round of 16.


ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 15, 2019) -- The 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur began Monday at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, with the Met Area represented by several of it's rising stars.

Jack Wall of Brielle, N.J., 2018 Met Open runner-up and the reigning winner of the MGA Junior Player of the Year Award Presented by Callaway, shared medalist honors in qualifying at Springdale Golf Club after carding a 5-under 67. This is Wall's second USGA championship of the season after competing in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in May, while he also competed in U.S. Open sectionals. Erik Stevens of Annandale, N.J., and Dean Greyserman of Short Hills, N.J., also matched Wall's 67 at Springdale and is also in the field. Greyserman is the younger brother of Korn Ferry Tour competitor Max Greyserman, and has three AJGA top-10 finishes this year.

Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y., qualified at Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford, Conn., posting a 3-under 69 and earning the final qualifying spot in a playoff. Han, competing in his second U.S. Junior Amateur, is a two-time MGA/MetLife Boys champion. Rounding out Met Area participants is James Allen of Scarsdale, N.Y., who qualified at Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Conn.
