ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 26, 2019)  The 15th Governor Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup serves as a highlight on the fall schedule, with the biennial matches between the MGA and Golfing Union of Ireland taking place October 22-23 at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J.

With the matches quickly approaching, the MGA is pleased to announce Darin Goldstein of Deepdale and James Nicholas of Westchester Country Club – the last two winners of the MGA Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year Award – as its first two team members of the six-man squad. Two more selections will be announced in the coming weeks, while the final slots are planned to be filled prior to the end of August.

Goldstein, 37, has been a staple on the MGA's international teams, competing on the last four squads. Nicholas, meanwhile, will be making his first-ever start in an MGA team competition following his recent graduation from Yale University where he was twice named the Ivy League Player of the Year.

The Carey Cup – which originated as the Metedeconk International Challenge Cup – was first played in 1990. The teams played once again in Ireland in 1992 but did not meet in 1994. In 1996, the matches were conducted again thanks to an effort spearheaded by the late Governor Hugh L. Carey, who envisioned the matches as an opportunity to foster sportsmanship and goodwill between the countries. Ever since, the matches have been played in his honor with a spirit of camaraderie and competition.

The event officially kicks off on Monday, October 21 with an "Am-Am," in which each of the GUI and MGA players will be paired with three amateurs in a best ball competition.
