Modern Destinations for the Modern Game

Sand Valley Golf Resort: Mammoth Dunes - Nekoosa, WI

With so many classic golf resorts to choose from why would you seek out one of the newer places?  One reason only: They’re that good.

More than any individual since the inventor of the golf cart, Mike Keiser changed the way we experience and dream about the game and our leisure.  When Bandon Dunes opened in 1999, offering an authentic vision of links golf on the Oregon coast, it created a new paradigm for travelers and destinations, one we can call the Neo-Classical Golf Resort.  It harkened back to a more natural version of the game – minimalist in appearance, yet more varied and inviting than playing mostly through the air.

The characteristics of a Neo-Classical Golf Resort are easy to recognize: multiple golf courses; an inconvenient location (no major population center in the immediate area); comfortable but not fussy amenities; good food that will never be mistaken for a work of art; an emphasis on walking, with local caddies provided.  It’s not the usual game you play back home, unless you are exceptionally lucky in your chosen location.  Increasingly, there is also a reduced-golf option – a par-3 course, a challenging putting green – to provide relief amidst a string of two-round days.

If you’ve been to any of the great Neo-Classical Resorts – Bandon, Streamsong, Sand Valley, Cabot, Big Cedar Lodge, Prairie Club – you know how perfectly they accommodate a getaway with friends and family who love the game.  Each of these and others in their wake provide delightful golf in exceptional settings, and they know how to step back and let you create your own treasured memories, the kind you savor all the more for the chosen companions who shared the journey.
