Rendell Medals, 11 Qualify for 70th MGA Public Links

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (June 7, 2017) – Qualifying for the 70th MGA Public Links Championship, the nation’s oldest public links championship, began Wednesday at Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn, N.Y. A total of 11 players qualified for the one-day, 36-hole championship, which will take place at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg, N.J., on July 6.

Matthew Rendell of MGA eClub – New York City earned medalist honors on the day with a score of 3-under 69. Rendell started his round hot, scoring birdies on five of his first six holes en route to a 2-under front nine 33. He added two more birdies on the back nine for a total of seven on the day. Rendell continues his hot play for the summer having qualified for the Ike two weeks ago.

Finishing one stroke behind with a 2-under 70 was recent University of Richmond graduate Mark Reilly of Peninsula Golf Club. Reilly, like Rendell, shot a 2-under 33 on the front nine thanks to 3 birdies.

Taking the next three spots shooting 3-over 75s were Steven Schwab Jr. of Silver Lake Men’s Golf Club, Paul Ulanich of South Shore Golf Club and Bob Reiter of MGA eClub – New York City.

Shooting 4-over 76’s were Michael Auerbach of Nassau Players Club and Jesse Clemente of Silver Lake Men’s Golf Club.

Claiming the last spots at 6-over 78 were Brent Fredericksen of Met PGA Junior Golf Club, Robert Jew of La Tourette, Anthony Mancini of Dyker Beach and Michael Marotta of South Shore Golf Club.

Marine Park played to a par 72 at 6,739 yards.

The MGA will conduct five qualifying rounds for the 70th MGA Public Links Championship. The next takes place June 13 at Bethpage State Park Golf Course (Blue) in Farmingdale, N.Y.
