U.S. Amateur Qualifying Results

The MGA conducted four 36-hole sectional qualifying rounds throughout the Met Area for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach, August 13-19.

Notes from each sectional qualifying round: 
 

Darien, Conn. (July 23, 2018) Max Theodokaris of Danbury, Conn., and Darin Goldstein of New York, N.Y., shared medalist honors to qualify for the 2018 U.S. Amateur from the sectional qualifying round at Country Club of Darien.

Theodokaris, a junior at Campbell University, carded two rounds of 2-under 69 to finish at 4-under for the day. This will be his first U.S. Amateur. Goldstein, the reigning MGA Mid-Amateur, got off to a hot start in the morning, leading the field with a 6-under 65. He followed that up with a 73 in the afternoon round and matched Theodokaris’ final score of 4-under. This 2018 U.S. Amateur will be Goldstein’s second appearance in the event, he previously qualified in 2016. He also qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2017.

Four playoff holes were needed to determine the first and second alternate positions. Andrew Sciarretta of Stamford, Conn., came out on top to take the first alternate position. Andrew Biggadike of Belmont, Calif., is the second alternate. Sciarretta is on the golf team at Richmond, and was previously roomates with   Matt Lowe, who qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Brookville Country Club (below), also on Monday.

Harrison, N.Y. (July 23, 2018) - Christian Cavaliere of Katonah, N.Y., led the field at Willow Ridge Country Club with the low score of 5-under for the day. He carded rounds of 70-67 to take home medalist honors. One shot back was Etienne Brault of Quebec with rounds of 72-66-138 to take the second and final qualidying position. 

One playoff hole decided the alternate positions after two players finished their days at 2-under 140. Michael Young of Thoiry (France) claimed the first altnerate position; Christian Del Vecchio of Muttontown, N.Y., is the second alternate.

Glen Head, N.Y. (July 23, 2018) - Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., earned medalist honors at Brookville Country Club thanks to a two round total of 2-under 140. Lowe found himself near the top of the leaderboard following a morning round of 2-under 69, which consisted of 5 birdies. Consistent play in the afternoon led to a round of even par 71 for the University of Richmond gradute and a trip to Pebble Beach for the 2018 U.S. Amateur. 

Coming in close behind was Jack Casler of Garden City, N.Y. with a two round total of 1-under 141. Casler, who plays his college golf at Cornell University, was the leader in the clubhouse following the morning round after carding a 3-under 68. His solid play continued in the afternoon, as he made a decisive par on the final hole to shoot a round of 2-over 73 and ensure himself the final qualifying spot.

Two alternates were also designated with Will Rand of New York, N.Y. earning the first alternate spot with a two round total of even par 142 while Gregory Foo of Singapore claimed the second alternate spot in a playoff among the players who shot 1-over 143.

Westfield, N.J. (July 16, 2018) - Yale University golfer Eoin Leonard of England led the field with a two round score of 5-under 137 at Echo Lake Country Club. The other two qualifying positons were earned by Brandon Dalinka of New York, N.Y. and Matthew Cocorikis of Monroe Township, N.J. who both finished the day at 3-under 139.

2018 Westchester Open champ Cameron Young of Scarborough, N.Y., finished as the first alternate after finishing a few shots back at 2-under. Recent MGA Ike champion Michael Graboyes of Watchung, N.J., was the second alternate. He was 1-under for the day.

Other locals to qualifyGray Barnes of Stormville, N.Y., shot 70-65 to finish at 7-under and take home medalist honors from Redding Country Club on Monday, July 23. Brad Tilley of Easton, Conn., took the second qualifying position from that site after rounds of 68-68-136 (6-under). Brielle, N.J.'s Jack Wall is the second alternate from the Redding site.
