U.S. Amateur Continues at Ridgewood
UPDATE (August 17, 2022) -- Mark Costanza's bid to make match play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur fell just short Wednesday morning, as he made bogey in the 15-for-11 playoff to miss out on a final seed in the bracket. As the day continued at The Ridgewood Country Club, 2017 MGA Player of the Year Stewart Hagestad earned a 3-and-1 victory to continue his play in the championship.

The U.S. Amateur continues at Ridgewood through Sunday, with the Round of 32 and Round of 16 taking place on Thursday. The Quarterfinals and Semifinals follow on Friday and Saturday, respectively, setting up Sunday's 36-hole final to determine a champion.
Hagestad, the No. 9 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, defeated No. 7-ranked Sam Bairstow of England. Hagestad next faces Benjamin James of Milford, Conn., teeing off Thursday at 9:10 a.m.

UPDATE (August 16, 2022) -- Following a round of stroke play at both Arcola Country Club and The Ridgewood Country Club, the field is nearly set for match play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur. While 11 Met Area players began the quest for a spot, 2017 MGA Player of the Year Stewart Hagestad was the lone player to cleanly secure a spot in match play while two-time reigning MGA Player of the Year Mark Costanza will be in a playoff on Wednesday morning with a spot on the line.

Rounds of 74-72 were punctuated by a closing birdie on Arcola's par-5 ninth on Tuesday to keep Costanza's hopes alive.
"It was one that I almost kind of willed into the hole because I had so many chances on that back nine to make a birdie and I had great putts and great looks at it and couldn't get one to drop," said Costanza after his round. "It's just really satisfying to make that one at the end."
The 15-for-11 playoff is slated for 7:30 a.m., beginning on Hole 15 at Ridgewood and continuing through the 18th hole if necessary. If it continues, the 18th hole will be repeated until the spots are decided.
Costanza, who noted that he's had just two bad holes with a triple-bogey and double-bogey, is happy with his performance so far and is looking forward to having the chance to continue to compete in the national championship in his home state.
"It would have been really disappointing given how well I played to not have a chance, but I'm glad that at least I have a chance now, and it's such an amazing stage, and being so close to home, I hope I can keep moving on."
Hagestad used rounds of 69-74 to finish tied 21st and advance as he's making his 13th U.S. Amateur appearance.
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 10, 2022) -- After much anticipation, it's time for 312 of the world's best amateurs to descend upon the Met Area for the 122nd U.S. Amateur, August 15-21 at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., with neigboring Arcola Country Club serving as the stroke-play co-host. The Met Area will have strong representation with the national championship right in its backyard, with 11 players competing for the Havemeyere Trophy.

Two-time reigning MGA Player of the Year Mark Costanza leads the contingent, being exempt for the championship following his runner-up finish in the U.S. Mid-Amateur last season. Stewart Hagestad, the 2016 MGA Player of the Year, edged Costanza in the final and was also exempt as he returns to the region in which he's had plenty of success. Hagestad is making his field-leading 13th U.S. Amateur appearance. Costanza looks to continue another strong season in which he's finished as low amateur in the New Jersey Open and just recently advanced to the semifinals of the Met Amateur Championship.
Christian Cavaliere of Mahopac, N.Y., is making his third consecutive appearance in the U.S. Amateur, also coming off a match play appearance in the Met Amateur. He earned medalist honors at Westchester Hills, carding rounds of 63-68 to clear the field by an impressive eight shots.
Austin Devereux of Brielle, N.J., and William O'Neill of Morristown, N.J., will have the honor of striking the first tee shots off Nos. 1 and 10 at Arcola on day one, doing so at 7 a.m. Devereux secured his qualifying spot from Essex Fells Country Club in Essex Fells, N.J., while O'Neill did so at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., where he earned medalist honors by two shots.
Matt Mattare of Jersey City, N.J., rounds out the New Jersey natives competing in the national championship. This will be Mattare's first-ever U.S. Amateur appearance, but the 36-year-old and past Met Amateur champion is no stranger to the national stage, having qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur on six occasions.
Past Ike champion Matt Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., and four-time MGA winner Luke Sample of New York City complete the Empire State competitors in the field and both stand as two more competitors that were just in match play of the Met Amateur looking to make their way into the 64-man bracket at Ridgewood. Lowe recently qualified for this year's U.S. Mid-Amateur as well.
A trio of Connecticut natives round out the Met Area competitors in the field, as Rick Dowling of Shelton, Jackson Fretty of Cos Cob and Jack Woods of Danbury all make their first U.S. Amateur appearance. Fretty and Dowling led the way in qualifying at Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Conn., while Woods punched his ticket from Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich, N.Y.
Ridgewood is welcoming its fifth USGA event in its storied championship history, previously welcoming the 1957 U.S. Senior Amateur, the 1974 U.S. Amateur, the 1990 U.S. Senior Open and the 2016 U.S. Girls' Junior. With 27 holes on property, the championship course is a composite of the three nine-hole layouts at Ridgewood. The routing starts with Nos. 1-7 of the East Nine, followed by Nos. 2-6 on the Center Nine and finishes with Nos. 4-98 on the West Nine.
The MGA is pleased to once again preview the championship through its Road to the Majors video series in partnership with Rolex. Get a preview of both Ridgewood and Arcola from both club staff members and USGA officials as the U.S. Amateur returns to the Met Area for the first time since 2004 at Winged Foot Golf Club.
Fans have the chance to walk the fairways with the world's best amateur golfers and future stars of the games. The USGA is offering single-day gallery tickets and five-packs of gallery tickets that can be used over multiple days or shared iwth family and friends. Each individual ticket must be used for any one day of the match-play portion of the championship (Wednesday through Sunday) and will include general admission to the grounds, access to walk the course and access to purchase on-site food and beverages.
