31 Qualify for the 99th Westchester Amateur Championship

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. (May 23, 2018) – The lone qualifying round for the 99th Westchester Amateur Championship took place Wednesday at Leewood Golf Club, where a total of 31 players qualified for the WGA’s match play championship, June 5-7 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Conn. The qualifiers join reigning champion Christian Cavaliere of Mahopac, who was exempt into the field.

The two leaders of the pack, sharing identical scores of 3-over 73, were Daniel Gabel of McCann and Gray Barnes of Centennial.

Other notable performances came from James McHugh of Rye and Russell Giglio of Knollwood, who’s cards of 4-over 74 safely earned them spots in the championship.

2017 WGA Junior Champion Matt Minerva, Jr. of Hudson National punched his ticket to the championship with a round of 5-over 75, as did Brian Flanagan of Rye and Sam Weiss of Century.

Rounding out the top ten qualifiers with rounds of 6-over 76 were Patrick Mainey of Powelton, Nicholas DiMarco of Union Vale and Jon Renza of Garrison.

Sixteen players safely qualified with rounds of 10-over or better: Bear Carlson of Bedford (77), Nicholas Dilio of Union Vale (77), Ian Palfrey of Siwanoy (77), Adam Friedman of Birchwood (77), Michael Sobel of Hudson National (78), Eric Terminello of Knollwood (78), Shkelqim Kukaj of Rockland Lake (79), Daniel Berkson of Brae Burn (79), Adam Ochoa of Spook Rock (79), Benjamin Selkin of Burning Tree (80), Bart Weissman of Sterling Farms (80), Terence Opiola of Patriot Hill (80), Chris Rohrs of MGA eClub – New York City (80), Kyle Munoz of Leewood (80), Larry Haertel Jr. of Round Hill (80), Michael Bernacchia of MGA Eclub – Wch/CT (80).

The remaining players qualified through a 6-for-5 playoff: Andrew Singer of MGA eClub New York City (81), Shane Malloy of Winged Foot (81), Craig Leonard of Wykagyl (81), Jason Fortin of Westchester CC (81), Jordan Barrow of Fenway (81).

Three alternates were also named with Michael Leder of Old Oaks earning first alternate, while Matthew Sweet of Met PGA Junior received the second alternate position and Jack Yorizzo grabbed the third alternate position.

Leewood Golf Club played to a par 70 at 6,325 yards.
