19 Advance to Hollywood as Qualifying for 102nd Met Open Begins

BEDMINSTER, N.J. (July 25, 2017) – Qualifying for the 102nd Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway began Tuesday at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club. A total of 19 competitors, 13 of which were amateurs, carded scores of even-par 72 or better to advance to the championship proper, August 22-24 at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, N.J.

Amateur Jeremy Wall of Manasaquan River, Mackenzie Tour competitor Ryan Snouffer of Essex County, and recent U.S. Junior Amateur competitor Christopher Gotterup of Rumson scored 4-under 68s to lead the field and share medalist honors.

Playing at his home club, Brendan Davis finished fourth with a score of 3-under 69, while Jack Panagos of Neshanic Valley followed with 2-under 70.

Eight competitors filled out a large proportion of the qualifying positions with scores of 1-under 71, including professionals Chris Scialo of Edgewood, and Frank Esposito, Jr., of Forsgate, and amateurs Gregg Angelillo of Baltusrol, Sam Bernstein of Century, Justin Chae of New Jersey National, Jason Bataille of Neshanic Valley, Ethan Ng of Fiddler’s Elbow, and MGA eClub – New Jersey member Gus Steiger, Jr.

Rounding out the remaining qualifying positions with scores of even-par 72 were professionals Mark McCormick of Suburban, William Hook of Knickerbocker and Ray Ferrari of Deal, plus amateurs Michael O’Connell of Arcola, Gene Yang of Darlington, and Jonathan Jeter of Nassau Players.

Fiddler’s Elbow played to a par of 72 from 6,853 yards. The starting field of 144 players were competing for 16 qualifying positions plus ties.

The MGA will conduct six total qualifiers throughout the Met Area for the 102nd Met Open. The next is July 31 at Wheatley Hills Golf Club in East Williston, N.Y.
