Met Area Locals Head to U.S. Mid-Amateur
Rumson, N.J. – After two days of grueling match play golf, Gene Yang became the 37th winner of the MGA/MetLife Boys Championship, and just the first player in MGA history to hold both the MGA Boys and MGA Junior titles in the same year.
Rumson, N.J. – Rounds one and two of 2005 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship at Rumson Country Club in Rumson, NJ were completed today leaving just four boys left vying for the title. Max Bichsel, Rand Araskog, Gene Yang and Brian Murphy will play tomorrow for the championship.
Locust Valley, N.Y. - Fifty-seven year old Ron Vannelli of Metuchen CC in N.J. became what is believed to be the oldest champion in Met Amateur history today after defeating Patrick Pierson from Minisceongo 1 up on the second extra hole of the 36-hole final of the MGA Amateur Championship at The Creek in Locust Valley, NY.
The magic ran out for 52-year-old Tom Yellin on Saturday, at the 103rd Met Amateur where he lost his semi-final match to Metuchen’s Ron Vannelli 6&5 after three days of superb play at The Creek, the spectacularly beautiful course on Long Island’s north shore in Locust Valley, NY. Vannelli, a contemporary of Yellin, who was the on-site medalist at the US Senior Amateur at Bel-Aire CC in 2004, will meet Patrick Pierson of Minisceongo in the 36-hole final, after Pierson defeated Tarik Can of Bethpage 4&3.
Mamaroneck, N.Y. - Morgan Hoffmann of Wyckoff, NJ, survived soaring heat and a demanding 36 holes over the West and East courses of the famed Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY, to claim the 3rd annual Carter Cup/MGA Junior Stroke Play Championship title in a playoff with Dan Abbondandolo of Oyster Bay, NY. Hoffmann won the title with a par on the first playoff hole, the par 3- 10th on the West Course, after both players posted three over par 145’s for the 36 hole championship to top the field of 51 select junior golfers.
