Victory prompts recollections of Wagner’s run of five MGA majors

The 2008 MGA Foundation Spring Educational Series has concluded one of its most successful seasons ever, following a month-long program of educational forums. These programs are open to the public and are designed to educate club leaders and the golfing public about a wide range of topics of interest to Met Area golfers including the Rules of Golf, handicapping procedures, new technology and MGA and MGA Foundation services and programs. The MGA also participated in two highly successful Met Area golf shows. A brief review of these programs follows:

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (April 3, 2008) - Charlie Sifford, the first African-American to play the PGA Tour and the first black golfer to be enshrined at the World Golf Hall of Fame, will be recognized for his pioneering career achievements by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association at their 57th National Awards Dinner on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. Sifford will receive the Gold Tee Award, the MGWA’s highest honor.

EAST WILLISTON, N.Y. (March 27, 2008) - The Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation is pleased to announce Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., as the recipient of the second annual MGA Club Environmental Award. The award honors an MGA member club that has demonstrated environmental stewardship through golf course maintenance, construction, education and research.

BRONX, N.Y. (March 27, 2008) - Philip Spano, an Ace level student in The First Tee of Metropolitan New York program at Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx, N.Y., and a Class of 2009 First Tee Scholar, was one of three students nationwide chosen to attend last week’s WGC-CA Championship as an on-course reporter.

BRONX, N.Y. (April 3, 2008) - On Sunday, April 27th NBC weathercaster SallyAnn Mosey will broadcast her weekend weather show from Mosholu Golf Course in The Bronx, N.Y., home of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York. The show is done live from 6:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. and will feature four, two-minute spots highlighting First Tee programming initiatives in place at five Metropolitan Area sites. The interviews are scheduled for 6:12 a.m., 6:32 AM, 7:12 a.m. and 7:32 a.m.

NEWARK, N.J. (March 25, 2008) - Junior golfers from Newark and surrounding communities attended an Open House hosted by The First Tee of Metropolitan New York. The youngsters had the chance to take some swings and receive some instruction on the driving range and putting green at the popular Weequahic Park facility, followed by the opportunity to play a few holes.
