Costanza Captures 35th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship

Shelter Island, N.Y.-After two long days of tournament tough golf under sweltering temperatures - and interrupted briefly by the “Big Blackout of 2003” - the 35th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship concluded with 14-year-old Marc Costanza of Upper Saddle River, NJ, defeating 15-year old Brendan Tracy of New York, NY, 2 & 1 in the finals at Gardiner’s Bay CC.  It was a satisfying win for Costanza who finished two strokes behind Tracy in last week’s inaugural Carter Cup – MGA Junior Stroke Play Invitational at Baltusrol Golf Club, to take third place.

MGA Team Finishes Third in 2003 Williamson Cup Matches

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-A four-man junior team representing the Metropolitan Golf Association finished third in the 30th Williamson Cup Matches held today at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Île Bizard, Ontario.  Teams representing ten Golf Associations throughout the United States and Canada competed in this 36-hole stroke play event, which counted three of the four-team members aggregate scores each round to determine the team championship.  Individual prizes were also awarded.

BLAIRGOWRIE, SCOTLAND-John Baldwin of the Meadow Brook Club, in Jericho, NY fell just short of defending his British Seniors Open Amateur Championship title with a 3rd place finish at the Blairgowrie, Rosemount & Lansdowne Courses in Blairgowrie, Scotland.   Although he shared the lead after the first two rounds, Baldwin finished three shots back with a total of 218 (70 – 74 – 74).

Nallen Named to 2003 Walker Cup Team

Far Hills, N.J. – Eight of the 10 members of the United States team for the Walker Cup Match, including recent U.S. Open qualifiers Bill Haas of Greer, S.C., and Trip Kuehne of Dallas, Texas, have been named by the United States Golf Association.   The 2003 Walker Cup Match will be played at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, from Sept. 6-7, against a 10-member team representing Great Britain and Ireland.

Tracy Takes MGA's Inaugural "Carter Cup" Junior Stroke Play Invitational Championship

Springfield, N.J.-Brendan Tracy of New York City captured the inaugural MGA “Carter Cup” Junior Stroke Play Invitational Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club with a birdie four on the first hole of a sudden death playoff with Marc Issler of Tom’s River, NJ. The two tied at 109 after a rain shortened tournament played over the Upper and Lower courses of one of the country’s most storied clubs.

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Four top Met Area junior golfers, including the son of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, have been selected to represent the MGA on the 2003 Williamson Cup Team which will travel to Montreal, Canada on August 11-12, for the 40th playing the Williamson Cup Inter-City Matches at Royal Montreal Golf Club.

He was nearly twice as old as his opponent, but thirty one year old Mike Stamberger of Plainfield CC outlasted 16-year-old Michel Quagliano, the reigning MGA Junior and Boys Champion from Knollwood CC, winning the 101st edition of the Met Amateur on the 37th hole of the final match at Somerset Hills Country Club.  Stamberger, a Sales Trader at Jeffries & Co. in NYC, won with a routine par on the first extra hole, after Quagliano missed a par putt from four feet and three putted the hole.

Bernardsville, N.J.-2003 MGA/MetLife Junior and 2002 MGA/MetLife Boys Champion Michael Quagliano of Knollwood will face 2003 NYC Amateur Champion Michael Stamberger of Plainfield in the 101st Met Amateur Championship 36-hole final match tomorrow at the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, NJ.  Sixteen-year-old Quagliano will attempt to become the youngest Met Amateur Champion in history and the only player ever to win the Junior and Amateur Championships in the same year.

Bernardsville, N.J.-After two grueling days of championship golf at Somerset Hills Country Club, only four players remain in search of the 101st Met Amateur Championship title.  Youth will face experience in the semifinals, as 20-year old 2003 MGA/Canon Ike Champion, Brad Tilley, of Sleepy Hollow, will compete against 31-year-old Mike Stamberger of Plainfield, and 16-year-old 2003 MGA Junior Champion Michael Quagliano, of Knollwood, will face 51-year-old Allan Small of Fairmount CC, in Chatham, NJ.

RUMSON, N.J.--After two long days of tournament tough golf, the 34th MGA/MetLife Boys Championship came to an end with 15-year-old Michael Quagliano of White Plains, NY, crowned the 2002 Champion and Ryan Shallcross of Westfield, New Jersey, the runner-up.  Today’s Boys Championship was sponsored by MetLife for the 18th consecutive year.
