Hoit, Thompson Advance-Pendrick and Reardon Fall in 19 Holes

Sea Island, G.A.-Roger Hoit of Baltusrol, and Mark Thompson of Plandome both advanced to the second round of Match Play at the 2004 U.S. Mid Amateur Championship at the Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, GA. Hoit defeated Jon Veneziano of Mount Dora, FL 1 up to advance to today’s match against Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, KS. Thompson had an easier time of it, disposing Brooks Newsom of Portland, OR, 5 and 3.

The Tuxedo Club’s Mike Reardon and Mill River’s (LI) Bryan Pendrick both had hard fought first round matches with each falling after 19 holes. Reardon played well but was defeated by long hitting Walker Cupper Trip Kuehne after the 1994 U.S. Amateur runner-up made birdie on the first playoff hole. Pendrick made bogey on his first extra hole and fell to William Johnson of San Francisco.

Thompson plays Larry Tedesco formerly of Sterling Farms (CT) who reached the finals of the 1991 Met Amateur. Tedesco, a reinstated amateur, now lives in Cummings, GA. Other names local golf fans may remember who advanced include Dirk Fennie formerly of Ridgewood CC (NJ) and Austin Eaton formerly of Sterling Farms, who reached the quarterfinals of the Mid-Am in 2002 at The Stanwich Club.
