WILLIAMSON CUP TEAM HEADED TO SYRACUSE

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (August 4, 2006) – Four top Met Area junior golfers have been selected to represent the MGA on the 2006 Williamson Cup team, which will travel to Syracuse, New York for the 43rd playing of the Williamson Cup Inter-City Matches, to be held on August 14-15 at Bellevue Country Club.

Representing the MGA will be 14-year old David Pastore of Greenwich, Connecticut,  the 2006 MGA/MetLife Junior champion; Drew Baity, also of Greenwich, who tied for 12th  in the 2006 Carter Cup/MGA Junior Stroke Play Championship; 16-year-old Max Bichsel of Cranbury, New Jersey, who tied for 2nd in the 2006 Carter Cup and who qualified for the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur; and 17-year-old Peter Kratsios of Manhasset, N.Y., who qualified for the 2006 MGA/MetLife Public Links Championship.

The Williamson Cup was created in 1964 by long-time MGA Junior Committee member/chairman A. Fred Williamson. The event is named in honor of his father, Fred E. Williamson, a Winged Foot founder and former club president who passed away in 1951. Inspired by the Lesley Cup Matches, in which A. Fred Williamson played, the Williamson Cup originated as a competition among teams of junior golfers representing major East Coast cities, and quickly grew to include several Canadian Associations and others from the Northeast and Midwest U.S., with each region taking a turn as host. In 1995, a team from the Ligue de Paris was invited to participate, thereby expanding the event to another continent.

The format for the Williamson Cup is four-man teams playing 36 holes of stroke play over two days. The team champions are determined by taking the three lowest aggregate scores of the four-man teams from each Association. Individual prizes are also awarded. The young men who compete are expected to display the highest standards of sportsmanship, as mandated by Fred Williamson, who ran the matches until 1985.
