Rice, Montgelas Win MGA Mixed Pinehurst

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (September 19, 2007) –  Wee Burn Country Club’s Jay Riceand Becky Montgelas teamed up to win the MGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship today at Elmwood Country Club in White Plains, New York. Rice and Montgelas carded a three-under-par 68 to win by one stroke over Peter Ganley of Wheatley Hills andLee Ann Lewis of Southward Ho.

Montgelas and Rice, a former Connecticut State Open champion, found their rhythm early on with birdies at the second and eighth holes en rote to a two-under front nine. The only stumble during the round was a bogey at the 11th hole, but that was quickly made up when the duo birdied the 12th and 14th holes. Rice and Montgelas also teamed up to win this event in 1997. It was a disappointing day for the Ganley/Lewis team as this is the second consecutive year they have finished in second place.

Defending champion Gail Flanagan of Westchester and Michael Murr of Winged Foot finished third with a two-over 73. Michael Speiser of Brae Burn and Kathy Baker of Fenway carded a four-over 75 to finish tied for fourth with the Griff Harris team of Matthew Doran and Jessica Ells.

In the net division, Montgelas and Rice came in first after a combined handicap of two gave them a net score of 66, one better than Gerald Batt of Oak Hill and Meryl Schwartz of Dellwood, whose combined handicap index of nine gave them a net 67 after a gross 76.

All teams played under the Pinehurst scoring format: Both players hit drives, then each plays a second shot with the other’s ball. After the second shot, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed.  Alternate shots are then continued into the hole. On par-three holes, the choice must be made after the tee shots.
