MGA to Allow Measuring Devices in Competition

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (March 5, 2008) - The Metropolitan Golf Association has elected to allow the use of electronic distance-measuring devices in its competitions for 2008. Players will be permitted to use measuring devices that provide information on distance only. The MGA is joined by the Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey State Golf Associations in adopting this Local Rule for selected events.

The decision by the MGA to permit the use of electronic distance-measuring devices was made in accordance with USGA Decision 14-3/0.5 to the Rules of Golf adopted in 2006. The Decision authorizes a committee to adopt a Local Rule allowing the use of distance-measuring devices. The Local Rule prohibits the use of a device capable of gauging or measuring other conditions that might affect play (i.e. gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.), regardless of whether such a function is used. Distance-measuring devices are considered equipment under the Rules of Golf and may be carried by the caddie or shared by opponents and fellow competitors. For handicap purposes, as in the past, eligible scores made with distance-measuring devices must be posted. Scores made with devices which gauge or measure other conditions of play may not be posted for handicap purposes.

Distance-measuring devices will be allowed in all MGA championships except the Met Junior, MGA/MetLife Boys and the Carter Cup - MGA Junior Stroke Play Championship.
