First Tee of Metropolitan New York holds Interview Seminar

BRONX, N.Y. (February 11, 2012) - On Saturday, February 11th, 20 participants from The First Tee of Metropolitan New York (TFTMNY) gathered at Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx for an interview practice seminar as part of TFTMNY’s Path to College program. Designed to help high school students gain insight into the college application process, attendees received tips on interviewing and took advantage of mock interview sessions conducted by volunteer members of TFTMNY’s Young Benefactors.

Jim Downing, President of Hire Authority Staffing, led the discussion and had pointers for the youngsters on the do’s and don’ts of interviewing. Downing, a human resources expert, stressed the importance of preparation, appearance and confidence during the interview process. He then asked participants to prepare for a job interview at Modell’s Sporting Goods, and the students were put to the test by members of the Young Benefactors, who simulated and critiqued interviews with participants.

In addition, Downing and the Young Benefactors provided constructive criticism and writing assistance to the students, who brought the résumés they produced after last month’s Path to College seminar, “Building Your College Résumé.” The session concluded with a Question & Answer session led by TFTMNY Manager of Special Projects and Outcomes Katie Brenny, who along with Downing and the Young Benefactors discussed the best ways to answer difficult questions that may come up during an interview and offered further advice on how to follow-up with an interviewer.

Supported by The First Tee of Metropolitan New York Young Benefactors, Path to College is a series of informative seminars that focus on educating participants on college preparation. Topics covered include researching and applying to colleges, financial aid planning and skills for interviewing, essay writing and résumé building.
