Saladino's Run at the U.S. Mid-Am Comes to an End

UPDATED - October 8, 2013 (7 p.m.) - Joe Saladino's impressive run at the U.S. Mid-Am at the Country Club of Birmingham came to an end on Tuesday when he was defeated by Bill Williamson of Cincinnati, Ohio, 5&4. It was the second time in three years that Saladino advanced all the way to the Sweet 16.

UPDATED - October 8, 2013 (1 p.m.) - Saladino kept up his winning ways on Monday morning when he convincingly beat Joseph Alfieri II of Lutz, Fla., 6&5. His round included three birdies and only one bogey. He'll again play this afternoon at 2:10 ET against Bill Williamson of Cincinnati, Ohio.

UPDATED - October 7, 2013 (5:30 p.m.) - Huntington, N.Y.'s Joe Saladino won his match against T.J. Shuart on Monday, 2&1, to advance to the Round of 32. Stroke play medalist Matt Mattare of New York, N.Y., fell in his match to Davis Boland.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (October 7, 2013) - 2012 Met Amateur Runner-up Matt Mattare of New York, N.Y. finished with medalist honors during stroke play qualifying this weekend at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Birmingham. The 27-year-old shot scores of 67-69 for a 36 hole total of 5-under par 136. At last year's U.S. Mid-Am, Mattare, playing in his first USGA event, advanced to the quarterfinals.

Joining Mattare in match play is two-time MGA Player of the Year Joe Saladino of Huntington, N.Y. His scores of 72-71 led him to finish at 1-over 143, safely inside the cut line. Saladino, 33, had his best finish at a U.S. Mid-Am in 2010 when he advanced to the Round of 16 at Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, N.Y.

Both players have their first match on Monday, where Mattare will take on Davis Boland of Louisville, Ky. and Saladino will face T.J. Shuart of Coral Springs, Fla.
